DeLonghi EC702 15-Bar-Pump Espresso Maker
How i bought Delonghi EC702. For me finding a good espresso machine was really a big challenge. At first I bought Mr. Coffee steam espresso machine which was quite cheep. But what it produced had nothing to do with a real espresso. Then I made up my mind to find much more solid espresso machine. I visited a good deal of web-sites, read some articles, compared different prices, talked to the people who called themselves coffee experts etc. Actually I’ve done a lot of work. But the first problem I faced was that the different people had different opinions on the same machine. Secondly, I found out that it was important to establish my price range. The bigger price usually means better performance, design, features or longevity. One of my friends is raving about his new espresso machine which costs about 700$. It can do almost everything except reading the newspaper. But I didn’t want to buy a machine at such price. For the first time I wanted something cheaper. I limited my price range to 250$ and set about finding the best option within it.
My final choice was DeLonghi EC702. And I will try to give the reasons why I did not purchase other machines, though some of them could have been much better than the one I have chosen. A good thing about DeLonghi EC702 is that it produces a wonderful crema with a very rich taste. Due to perfect steaming wand, which is not very good in design, I can make magnificent Lattes. However it is necessary to add that some practice will be needed to make the perfect espresso. Here a lot of variables come into play – type of coffee, time that is needed for warm-up, time for compacting/tamping the coffee, etc. Two people will have absolutely different results. But it should be noted that the performance of Delonghi EC702 machine is almost flawless. I didn’t notice any problems or any leaks at all. I read carefully the instructions and followed them from the first use. I cleaned the machine in a proper way and every day I was rewarded by a nice cup of coffee.
Let’s look into some other positive features of the EC702 machine. It has a very nice clearance between the base and the filter holder. I use both standard espresso cups and a good size cappuccino mug that fits perfectly. And some other machines have problems with this. The machine has two different size filters. One of them is used for single shot espressos and the other is used for double shot espressos. Filters are equipped with the ESE pod system if you are into that. Usually I don’t usethose pods. Another positive is the easily removable and large water holder. And it looks nice. It is completely silver, mostly metal. Warming tray, that is located on top, really works. In 15 minutes, the recommended time for warm-up, my filters and cups become nice and warm. And that’s not a problem. After getting up and walking into the kitchen I turn it on. Than I get my kids going and when I come back, it is ready. I think that those people who usually complain because of the time needed to make coffee need to do re-evaluation of their addiction. The machine has a great price point – just fewer than 200 dollars.
Some other notes should be mentioned. The Delonghi EC702 machine may seem a bit noisy for the first seconds when it produces coffee. But to my mind it won’t cause much trouble. I think that my kid make much more noise in the morning that the machine. About 5-6 cups for the first time will taste awfully, just like battery acid. Before I started using the machine I knew that from one of my experienced friends. In order to get rid of that the nasty metallic taste the machine should be broken in. After getting it follow the directions and run water through it several times. Then make a few throw-away cups. For this purpose use less expensive coffee. In order to prep the machine let the coffee flavor permeate the filters. A good cleaning at proper intervals will be needed. I would highly recommend to purchase an external tamper if you want to keep the machine cleaner and consistent in your tamping. I bought such tamper on Amazon just for 8 dollars. And it is perfect to the DeLonghi EC702 filter. And don’t waste any dollar on very expensive tampers. They are almost the same. Make sure that you use very fine grinds for espresso machines. At Trader Joe I took some beans to a grinder. I set it to the best grind and thought it was perfect. Gradually my espressos much improved when I started to use a better grind. And so it is. I bought my machine at Bet, Bath.
I hope that my review will help people. I thought that I owed this review to those people who are in two minds when it comes to the actual choice of espresso machine. I was in the same situation some time ago. And thanks to those people who wrote their reviews I made the best possible choice. Finally I can say that when you get hooked on producing your own espressos, even using such a good machine as the DeLonghi EC702, you really start to see the value in more expensive models which are completely automatic. Those models can even grind the beans. The only bad thing about them is their price – they cost over 700 dollars. But if you don’t want to drop 700 dollars and don’t mind some manual labor, this machine will be one of the best options.
